Perfectly Balanced Stir-Fry: A Flavorful Meal for Family Dinners

Stir-frying is a cooking technique that has been popular in Asia for centuries. It involves quickly cooking ingredients over high heat while stirring them frequently, allowing the food to cook evenly and keep its texture and color. This method produces a delicious meal with minimal oil usage which makes it perfect for healthy eating.

Today’s recipe focuses on a stir-fry that combines sweet, savory, and slightly spicy flavors in a way that is sure to please both kids and adults. The main ingredient here is chicken breast, but you can also use tofu or beef if preferred by your family members. Vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, and broccoli add color and texture while providing essential vitamins and minerals.

Ingredients:

  • 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 medium red pepper cut into strips
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 cups sliced carrots
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (use low sodium for better health)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Olive or vegetable oil - enough for stir-frying (about 1-2 tablespoons)

Cooking time: Approximately 30 minutes. This includes marinating the chicken, chopping vegetables, preparing the sauce, and cooking.

Servings: Serves 4 people comfortably.

Method:

Firstly, take the chicken breasts out of their packaging, pat them dry with paper towels, and then slice each breast into thin strips. Place these pieces in a bowl large enough to hold all of your ingredients. Next, add about two tablespoons of soy sauce along with one teaspoon of sesame oil. Stir gently until the marinade coats every piece of chicken evenly.

While you're waiting for the chicken to marinate, chop up any remaining vegetables. If using frozen peas, make sure they are thawed but not soggy. Place these vegetables in a separate bowl or container so that they don't mix with the raw chicken until it's time to cook everything together.

Once your prep work is done, heat about 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil (or any other neutral-flavored cooking oil you have on hand) in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot enough, carefully add the marinated chicken strips and stir-fry until they are no longer pink inside but still slightly rare. Be cautious not to overcrowd your pan; otherwise, the temperature will drop too quickly.

After cooking the chicken for around 8 minutes or so, take a wooden spoon or spatula to remove half of it from the wok and set aside in another plate. Now lower the heat if necessary and add more oil as needed if you feel like there isn’t enough remaining. Throw in your chopped vegetables now; they won't require long cooking time compared to meat. Stir-fry for about 5 minutes or until bright colors appear.

Now comes the final step where you combine the cooked chicken back into the wok along with all those veggies. Add a teaspoon of minced garlic, some red pepper flakes if desired (for extra heat), and finally, pour in the remaining soy sauce mixture. Mix everything well for another minute or two before serving immediately.

For best results, serve this stir-fried dish warm straight from the wok onto plates. Garnish with additional sesame seeds sprinkled over top. Serve alongside steamed rice or noodles if preferred by your household members.
